Iran’s No to Execution Tuesdays campaign marks 87th week across 52 prisons (September 23, 2025)

The “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign entered its 87th week on September 23, 2025, as repression and executions escalate across Iran.

In its new statement, the campaign declared: “The 87th week of the ‘No to Execution Tuesdays’ campaign is taking place while the shadow of fear and repression weighs more heavily than ever on the people of Iran. In recent months, we have witnessed an unprecedented surge in executions: since September 16, at least 46 executions have been reported, including two women and six fellow Baluch citizens, while in the month of Sharivar (August 21-September 22) alone, 186 executions, including seven women, were recorded.”

The statement highlighted the “brutal execution of Babak Shahbazi, another member of the ‘No to Execution Tuesdays’ campaign, on the anniversary of the 2022 popular uprising, without even a final meeting with his family.” His secret execution, the statement continued, “stands as a bitter symbol of the inhuman conduct and human rights violations perpetrated by this murderous regime.” His abduction from his ward for execution sparked “protests and a sit-in by his fellow inmates in Ghezel Hesar Prison.”

The campaign strongly denounced the regime’s duplicity: “A regime that on the one hand boasts of ‘pardoning’ prisoners, on the other hand exposes its grim and inhumane reality each week through the ever-growing number of executions.”

Emphasizing the growing resistance, the campaign added: “This year, coinciding with the reopening of schools, once again conscious and progressive teachers and students are at the forefront of the struggle for freedom and equality. The youth of Iran are the nightmare of this regime, and in every school and university, activists stand firm to turn these spaces into centers of resistance and voices of opposition to the inhuman death sentences against their compatriots.”

Addressing both Iranians and the international community, the statement stressed: “The ‘No to Execution Tuesdays’ campaign cries out to the freedom-loving people of Iran and all human rights defenders worldwide that silence in the face of these violent and inhumane policies is unacceptable. Our voices must be louder than any repression or injustice. Every week, every Tuesday, in memory of the victims of executions, we rise up for justice and in defense of life. Life is the fundamental right of every human being, and execution is an unjustifiable act of violence against this right.”

As part of the 87th week of action, campaign members launched hunger strikes in 52 prisons across Iran, including Evin, Ghezel Hesar, Karaj Central, Greater Tehran, Qarchak, Adelabad (Shiraz), Zahedan, Rasht, Tabriz, Urmia, Sanandaj, and many others.

The statement concluded: “Every week, every Tuesday, in memory of the victims of executions, we rise up for justice and in defense of life.”
