Mother of American held in Iran calls for release of her son

While Iran and the six major powers agree to extend negotiations for four months over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, a mother of Amir Hekamti being held in Iran has pleaded with President Obama for his release.

Behnaz Hekmati, a naturalized US citizen wrote in a letter to President Obama: “This is a historic time for Iran and the United States. I plead that you do not forget… Amir, his service, his beautiful smile and his zeal for life,” Agence France-Presse reported.

She described her current stress is “nearly unbearable” as her husband is “gravely ill” with terminal cancer, after suffering a stroke as well.

Mrs. Hekmati wrote that her husband “wants nothing more than to see his son once again.”

Amir Hekmati, 30, was born in the US and served the US military as a marine. In 2011 he was arrested by the Iranian regime.

They claimed that he was trained in Iraq and Afganistan as a spy, and sentenced him to death, however this sentence was overturned and instead he was sentenced to 10 years in jail.

Meanwhile, his family has stated that he was in fact just visiting family in Iran when he was captured, and that he was never trained as a spy.
