Iran Uprising at a Glance – Day 165

Based partially on reporting by PMOI (MEK) Network in Iran

Monday, February 27, 2023 – 8 PM GMT + 1

  • Days: 165
  • Protests: 282 cities
  • Fatalities: 750+ estimated deaths, 664 identified by MEK
  • Detentions: 30,000

Iran’s nationwide uprising witnessed its 165th day on Sunday as more people from all walks of life in Iran were launching a rising number of protests against the mullahs’ regime, especially voicing their grievances over the country’s plummeting economy and their poor work, and living conditions. Cities throughout the country, including Tehran, Isfahan, and others were scenes of people taking to the streets to continue the Iran revolution protests sparked in September 2022.

On Monday morning, retirees, and pensioners of the regime’s telecommunications industry in Isfahan, central began protesting low pensions and poor economic conditions. These types of anti-regime gatherings are escalating and becoming a major concern for regime officials, especially at a time when the country’s economy is in shambles and the national currency, the rial, is nosediving against the U.S. dollar.

Similar protest rallies were held in the cities of Tehran, Mashhad, Sanandaj, Arak, Kermanshah, Ardabil, Khorramabad, Hamadan, and Bandar Abbas, along with rallies in Kurdistan and Markazi (Central) provinces.

Steelworkers in the city of Yazd rallied once again on Monday demanding better living and work conditions, and seeking a pay raise to enable them to make ends meet for their families.

Last night till the early hours of Monday, locals in Tehran’s Narmak, Niavaran, and Tehranpars districts were chanting anti-regime slogans, including:
“Death to Khamenei! Damned be Khomeini!”
“Death to the child-killing regime!”
“Death to the dictator!” referring to regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
“Death to the oppressor! Be it the Shah or [Khamenei]!”
“This is the year Seyed Ali (Khamenei) is overthrown!”

Iran Sees New Protests as National Currency Continues Its Nosedive

Iran Protests February 26 2023

Iran’s nationwide uprising is witnessing its 164th day on Sunday as more people are protesting poor living conditions and low paychecks. The country’s economy is in shambles as the national currency, the rial is nosediving in unprecedented fashion, trading at 583,500 rials per one U.S. dollar on Sunday morning. Just one week ago on February 19, the U.S. dollar was selling at 489,000 rials.

People throughout the country are specifically holding the mullahs’ Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei responsible for their miseries, while also condemning the oppressive Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and paramilitary Basij units, alongside other security units that are on the ground suppressing the peaceful demonstrators.

iran isfahan workers strike 1

Around 900 workers of the Esfahan Steel Company have started a strike since February 25, protesting against the authorities’ failure to hold their promises and address their demands. The protesters held a rally on the premises of the complex.

This gathering, which continued throughout the night, was suppressed by the company’s special guards that were supported by security forces. According to local sources, special units attacked the workers, arresting dozens and taking them away.

The workers of Esfahan Steel Company had already gone on strike several times with the demand for a salary increase and fairer wages, which the company management had promised to enforce. But after 3 months, these promises have not been fulfilled and the workers and their families are suffering from economic hardships.

Vilifying Iran Opposition Serves the Ruling Tyrants

townhall-logo

A short while ago, I invited the Washington Examiner to scrutinize the dishonest and false assertions of Michael Rubin against the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK), Iran’s primary democratic opposition. Instead, Rubin uses another platform to promulgate his spurious narratives. However, as the MEK garners mounting support, Rubin’s exasperation seems to intensify to the extent that he has now aligned himself with the regime’s threats against the MEK leadership.

It seems the controversial American Enterprise Institute (AEI) employee has tempered his hyperbole after I fact-checked his claims. For instance, he’s dropped using the regime’s acronym MKO and now qualifies his statements by saying “many” Iranians dislike the MEK, not “all.” Similarly, he’s replaced “everyone,” calling the MEK a cult with “some” people.

Migrant Shipwreck in Italy Kills at Least 59, Including 12 Children

ROME, Feb 26 (Reuters) – At least 59 people died, including 12 children, when a wooden sailing boat carrying migrants to Europe crashed against rocks near the southern Italian coast early on Sunday, authorities said.

The vessel, which sailed from Turkey and was carrying people from Afghanistan, Iran and several other countries, sank in rough seas before dawn near Steccato di Cutro, a seaside resort on the eastern coast of Calabria.

The incident reopened a debate on migration in Europe and Italy, where the recently-elected right-wing government’s tough new laws for migrant rescue charities have drawn criticism from the United Nations and others.
