Iran Uprising at a Glance – Day 72

Based partially on reporting by PMOI (MEK) Network in Iran

Saturday, November 26, 2022 – 7 PM GMT+1

  • Days: 72
  • Protests: 252 cities
  • Fatalities: 660+ estimated deaths, 528 identified by MEK
  • Detentions: 30,000+

Large demonstrations took place on university campuses today, e.g. in Isfahan University of Technology whose students are boycotting their classes and continuing the nationwide protests against the regime on the 72nd day of the uprising.

In Tehran, students at Amir Kabir University reportedly boycotted classes, protesting the arrest of their classmates, and voicing solidarity with the ongoing Iranian revolution against the religious dictatorship. Similar protest rallies were held at Pardis Faraby University, and the University of Science and Culture.

With the ongoing uprising in Iran, almost all commercial and industrial sector strikes are in sync with the protests. Over 4,000 workers at Isfahan’s critical industrial steel mill went on strike today in support of the protests ongoing throughout the country. Strikes were also reported by workers in Sarma Afarin Company in the Alborz Industrial Complex in Alvand city in Qazvin province. Morattab Company employees launched a strike today, protesting the regime’s refusal to pay their salaries for the past nine months. On Saturday, protests continued with more strikes by merchants and store owners in Zahedan and in many cities throughout Kurdistan province.

In Tehran, protesters are out setting up roadblocks in some neighborhoods in preparation for nightly protests against the regime. Attacks on regime centers continue to spread in Iran with a local branch of the regime’s “Islamic Development Organization” set ablaze by protesters in Poldokhtar in western Iran. Another IRGC paramilitary Basij center was torched in Mashhad, northeast Iran.

Ali Khamenei, the regime’s increasingly isolated and weakened leader, marshaled some of his loyalist followers in the paramilitary Basij organization to spur them on and tell them not to be disheartened. Regime forces, facing a broadening and widespread uprising that is spearheaded by the young generation and women, have shown increasing signs of exhaustion, fraying, and defections. In his televised speech Khamenei called the millions of Iranians opposed to his rule and called for his death misguided and agents of presumably foreigners.

He said the Basij militiamen “have sacrificed their lives to protect people from rioters,” while human rights monitors have reported over 660 protesters killed by the Basij, including 63 minors, with the MEK identifying 528 so far. Khamenei’s lame attempt at shoring up his base while alienating the Iranian population at large is indicative of his regime’s predicament as most observers confirm the extraordinary approach of his regime to the abyss of downfall.

FRANCE24-logo-30112020

In its investigation, the FRANCE 24 Observers team asked Iranians to send photographs of spent ammunition recovered from protests repressed by Iran’s security forces since the death of Mahsa Amini on September 16. The team analysed more than 100 photos and videos showing tear gas canisters, rifle bullets, paintball projectiles and cartridges from shotguns, which have been widely used by Iran’s security forces. While most of the shotgun shells photographed were made in Iran, 13 shells recovered from eight different Iranian cities bore Cheddite logos.
