Iranians in New York have staged a rally to condemn human rights violations in the Islamic regime and demand protection for dissidents trapped in Camp Liberty.
The demonstration outside the United Nations headquarters on Tuesday was times to coincide with a UN General Assembly human rights session that approved a resolution expressing ‘deep concern’ at the soaring number of executions in the regime.
Protesters also condemned the rapid rise in acid attacks on Iranian women and urged UN Security Council to protect more than 2,000 Iranian dissidents in Liberty and compel the Iraqi government to end the inhumane medical siege on the camp.
At least 22 residents have died in Camp Liberty due to lack of proper medical care and access to hospitals care.
Since President Hassan Rouhani took office, more than 1,000 people, including women, dissidents, and juveniles have been hanged, many in public.
The 61st UN resolution censuring the flagrant and systematic violation of human rights in Iran was adopted at the UN with support of 78 member countries, with 35 voting no and 69 abstaining.
The resolution builds on a recent report by a UN special investigator on human rights and points out that Iran has not allowed any investigator to visit since 2005.
The resolution calls on the Iranian regime to stop a range of abuses including torture, gender discrimination and the targeting of activists and journalists. It now goes to the General Assembly.
A report by The Associated Press said: “The Iranian opposition leader Maryam Rajavi said in a statement that the resolution ‘leaves no doubt that the appalling human rights record of the clerical regime must be referred to the Security Council for the adoption of binding and punitive measures’, and she warned that the nuclear talks should not be used as an excuse to ignore Iran’s human rights issues.”
