Former European Lawmaker Urges Tough New EU Policy on Iran
Former European lawmaker Struan Stevenson has called for a new Iran policy by the European Union.
In a conference at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday, October 23, 2019, entitled “European policy vis-à-vis Iranian regime’s suppression and warmongering, Massacre of political prisoners in 1988,” European lawmakers and personalities called for a new firm European policy on Iran.
Struan Stevenson told the conference that “We have a new Parliament and a new Commission and a new High Representative for Foreign affairs soon to take office. We need a new policy on Iran, and an end to the business-as-usual appeasement.”
Mr. Stevenson said that “we need to have a clear understanding of the religious fascism regime ruling in Iran.”

“This is a regime that boasts about its missiles and that is racing to build nuclear weapons.”
“This regime has slaughtered 120,000 people since 1979, and 30,000 people in the summer of 1988. The executions were carried out based on a fatwa by regime founder Ruhollah Khomeini. One of the key players was the current Iranian regime Justice Minister Alireza Avaei. He was appointed by Iranian regime President Hassan Rouhani, which the West regards as a ‘moderate’ president,” said Mr. Stevenson.
Regarding the situation of women in Iran, Mr. Stevenson said that “this is a regime that is oppressive to women. Ninety-seven women have been hanged during Rouhani’s “moderate” presidency, including 10 this year so far.”
Struan Stevenson said that according to information received from human rights institutions, in the past 12 months, 270 people were hanged in Iran. Eight of them were juveniles, and the medieval conditions in the prisons of Iran continue.
“This is a regime whose policy is based on the strategy of expansionism. They support Bashar al-Assad in Syria, the Houthis in Yemen, and the brutal Shiite militias in Iraq. They are attacking ships in the waters of the Persian Gulf. They are using their embassies to coordinate terror attacks here in Europe,” emphasized the former Chairman of the European Parliament's delegation for relations with Iraq.
He mentioned that Iran is also “one of the most pro-western countries in the region. But they are ruled by corrupt mullahs who only want to further enhance their own lavish lifestyles. Their people are sick of a regime that has bankrupted their country.”
Regarding the Iranian regime’s terrorism and warmongering policies Mr. Stevenson mentioned that this regime is backing the ruthless Houthi rebels in Yemen, the terrorist group Hezbollah in Lebanon, ruthless Shiite militias in Iraq, they attack and seize the oil tankers in the Gulf of Hormuz, firing missiles, organizing drone attacks on Saudi oil installations and even using the embassies as terror cells and bomb factories here in Europe.
“Iran is the most oppressive country in the Middle East,” added Mr. Stevenson.
“Mass protests against the fascist mullahs have been continuing for almost two years. During that time at least 45 people have been killed, around 2500 of the protesters have been arrested,” he added.
“The Iranian people have suffered for more than four decades,” Mr. Stevenson mentioned.

Mr. Stevenson ended his speech by a quote from Franklin Roosevelt: Appeasement is the policy of feeding your friends to the crocodile, one a time, with the hope that the crocodile will eat you last.
“Ladies and gentlemen let us not feed the crocodile,” concluded Mr. Stevenson.
