Finnish Euro MP urged Iraqi President to ensure PMOI’s safety and security

Finnish Euro MP urged Iraqi President to ensure PMOI's safety and securityNCRI – Piia-Noora Kauppi, head of the Finnish EPP-ED delegation in the European Parliament called on the Iraqi President, H.E. Jalal Talebani, to take serious measures to ensure the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran’s safety and security in Iraq. Her letter reads as follows:

"I am writing to express my concerns over yesterday’s tragic events that resulted in many deaths and injuries of ordinary citizens in your country.

"I was particularly alarmed when I heard in the news that a bus carrying workers from Khalis to Ashraf – the base of the Peoples Mojahedin (PMOI) – exploded by a bomb, killing at least 13 and injuring some 17 others.

"The PMOI has been target of many terrorist operations in Iraq by the Iranian regime in the past.

"I found this incident particularly alarming since this act, that seems to be the first direct terrorist act against those who work the PMOI, comes only one day after the Iranian foreign minister had finished his visit in Iraq.

"The PMOI members in Ashraf, who currently enjoy the status of "protected persons" under the Forth Geneva Convention, have been under continuous pressure by the Iranian regime and its agents in Iraq during recent months and I think it is time to take some serious measures to ensure their safety and security properly and according to the law.

"Therefore I think the status of political refugees should be granted to them which would guaranty that their fundamental rights are respected.

"I really appreciate your Excellency taking this issue into consideration."
