Iran News: Pompeo Warns of Tehran’s Nuclear Ambitions—”This Cannot Be Permitted”

Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in an interview with Fox News- December 2024

In a recent Fox News interview, former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a stark warning about the escalating nuclear threat posed by the Iranian regime. He emphasized the urgency of preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons, asserting that the regime’s ambitions are driven by desperation and vulnerability rather than strength.

“We must ensure the Iranian regime never acquires a nuclear weapon,” Pompeo said firmly. He warned of the dire consequences for global security if Iran succeeds: “There will be massive proliferation—more countries will decide to get a nuclear weapon. This cannot be permitted.”

Pompeo highlighted the regime’s weakened state, citing setbacks in 2023, including economic struggles and reduced influence among its proxy networks. He criticized the current administration’s approach, stating, “They’ve never negotiated; they’ve always understood that power was the most important thing.” Pompeo underscored the need for decisive leadership, expressing confidence in the incoming administration’s ability to restore effective pressure:

“President Trump will deliver a policy that puts more pressure on the regime, gives the Iranian people an opportunity for freedom and liberty, and protects America in a way that always puts our country first.”

Pompeo issues warning about Iranian nuclear threat: 'Make sure this never happens'

On December 22, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told CNN that the Iranian regime’s desperation, stemming from its diminished conventional and proxy capabilities, could accelerate its nuclear pursuits. Pompeo agreed, describing the situation as a consequence of Iranian weakness: “An Iran with a nuclear weapon would present a fundamentally different problem set for the region and the United States. We cannot allow that to happen.”

Pompeo pointed to the success of the Trump administration’s maximum pressure campaign, noting how it constrained Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and diminished its resources for destabilizing the region. “We had worked to put enormous economic pressure on the regime so that they had no capability to build out that weapons program,” he stated.

With the incoming administration expected to revisit these strategies, Pompeo stressed the importance of maintaining a firm stance against Tehran. “The Iranian regime doesn’t respond to diplomacy. It only understands strength,” he concluded, advocating for a return to policies that prioritize security and accountability.
