Iran: Judiciary rejected the request for a retrial for political prisoner Mehdi Hassani, putting him at risk of execution
Today, Sunday, February 23, 2025, the regime’s judiciary rejected the request for a retrial of Mehdi Hassani’s death sentence.
Political prisoner Mehdi Hassani, who has been sentenced to death on charges of membership in the PMOI (People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran), was suddenly transferred from Ward 8 of Evin Prison to Qezelhessar Prison on January 27, 2025. Following this transfer, prisoners in Ward 8 of Evin staged a protest.
His death sentence was issued on September 16, 2024, by Iman Afshari, head of Branch 26 of Tehran’s so-called Revolutionary Court, on charges of “rebellion (Baghi), waging war against God (Moharebeh), corruption on earth (Efsad-e-fel-Arz), membership in the PMOI, gathering and collusion against national security, collecting classified information, and illegal possession of weapons and military ammunition.” This verdict was subsequently upheld by the clerical regime’s Supreme Court on January 7, 2025.
Mehdi Hassani, a 48-year-old political prisoner born in Shahr-e Rey and father of three children, was arrested in Zanjan on September 11, 2022, and transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison, where he was subjected to severe torture.
Amnesty International, in its appeals on January 16 and January 23, called for the immediate annulment of his death sentence, condemning the ruling as grossly unjust and based on charges related to his support for the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
The Iranian Resistance calls for urgent action by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Special Rapporteur to save the life of Mehdi Hassani and other prisoners facing execution.
