Iran: Repression to Maintain Power at All Costs

For the past seven years, senior regime officials in Tehran have openly acknowledged the looming threat to their rule. As early as 2018, Nategh Nouri, former Speaker of the National Assembly, and Javad Amoli, a prominent cleric from Qom, were already contemplating the regime’s potential collapse. Seven years later, mounting economic crises and significant foreign policy failures have accelerated this inevitable reckoning. The supreme leader’s immediate strategy is clear: suppress public dissent through heightened repression.

Repression is not new to the Iranian people. Under Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the notorious SAVAK internal security service was responsible for the deaths of thousands of dissidents. When Khomeini seized power, SAVAK was rebranded as the Ministry of Intelligence (MOIS), while retaining much of its personnel. A state television documentary broadcast on February 2, 2025, revealed that 10 of SAVAK’s 11 divisions pledged allegiance to Khomeini even before the Shah’s downfall.

Panama Revokes 128 Ship Registrations in Crackdown on Russia and Iran’s Shadow Fleet

Panama has ramped up its crackdown on sanctioned vessels by revoking the registration of 128 ships, a move primarily targeting the “shadow fleet” facilitating oil exports from Russia and Iran. According to Bloomberg, Ramón Franco, director general of merchant marine at the Panama Maritime Authority, confirmed that at least 70 tankers have already been removed from the registry, with more to follow. This decision aligns with broader international efforts to enforce sanctions and curb illicit energy trade.

Merchant ships often sail under flags of convenience, which provide regulatory benefits but also present risks of abuse. Bloomberg notes that the small Central American country, home to the world’s largest shipping registry with over 8,000 vessels, has been under increasing pressure to uphold global sanctions. The deregistration process, which previously took up to six months, has now been streamlined to just a few weeks, reflecting Panama’s commitment to regulatory tightening.

Iranian Regime’s Special Committee Denies Responsibility for 2022 Protest Crackdown in Report to UN

Iran-Protests-January-4-2022-696x395-1

The Iranian regime’s special committee, appointed by President Masoud Pezeshkian to investigate the nationwide protests of 2022, has submitted its second report, including a copy to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The report absolves the government of responsibility for the brutal suppression of the protests and denies allegations of torture. Strikingly, it states that had firearms been used more extensively, the protests would have been quelled sooner.

The report, made public on March 26, was handed to President Pezeshkian by the committee’s head, Hossein Mozaffar, on March 12. Iran’s permanent mission to the UN delivered it to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on March 21.

Instead of acknowledging the social and political causes of the protests—such as state interference in personal freedoms and widespread human rights violations—the report attributes the unrest to U.S. sanctions and economic difficulties.

Majidreza Hariri, the head of the Iran-China Chamber of Commerce, has openly acknowledged the pervasive corruption within Iran’s economic system, warning of its catastrophic consequences.

Hariri highlighted that capital outflows have been ongoing since 2011, with an estimated $10 billion leaving Iran each year.

Approximately 17 Million Barrels of Iranian Crude Oil Stranded Near Malaysia Without Buyers

Bloomberg reports that more than 10 tankers carrying crude oil from the Iranian regime, which have been sanctioned by the United States, are stranded near the shores of Malaysia. This could be a sign of a slowdown in Iran’s oil shipments to China.

Appeasement Iran’s Regime is Complicity in the Suppression of its People

Suppression-of-Iranian-protesters

It is no surprise that Ali Khamenei, the Iranian regime’s supreme leader, has taken a firm stance in rejecting the U.S. proposal for negotiations. Throughout various stages of international talks on its nuclear program, the Iranian regime has always sought negotiations that would allow it room for deception and maneuvering. Meanwhile, the Iranian regime’s covert efforts in its nuclear program are fundamentally aimed at acquiring nuclear weapons, allowing it to impose itself and its policies on the region and the Iranian people. Iran’s nuclear program was first exposed by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), the largest Iranian opposition group, which brought the issue to the attention of the global community.
