Iran: Execution of Alireza Sepahi and Alireza Raisi, Two Prisoners of the January Uprising, in Isfahan

  • Maryam Rajavi strongly condemned this anti-human crime and called for urgent UN action to save other prisoners on death row

In the early hours of Monday, 5 October 2026, on the eve of 10 October, the World Day Against the Death Penalty, the executioners of the mullahs’ regime committed a savage crime by hanging Alireza Sepahi, 24, and Alireza Raisi, 21, two detainees of the January uprising, in Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan. The regime’s judiciary fabricated charges against them, including “enmity against God” (Moharebeh) through the use of weapons, corruption on earth, and action against national security. In the lexicon of the religious fascism ruling Iran, national security implies nothing other than the security of the anti-human mullahs’ regime.

These two individuals were sentenced to death in the Isfahan case known as the “Alikhani Square” case, which involved the deaths of four Special Units agents who were actively engaged in suppressing the public during the uprising. The criminal death sentences were issued by the regime’s executioner judges, Morteza Barati Dorcheh and Mohammadreza Tavakoli. Twenty-three others involved in this case have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from 5 to 10 years, and several others remain under active death sentences.

Previously, five defendants in this case—Erfan Esfandiari, Gol-Mohammad Mohammadi, Amirhossein Safari, Abolfazl Sepahi (a cousin of Alireza Sepahi), and Ghaem Hosseini—were hanged in July and August of this year. They were denied the right to select their own lawyers, and their court-appointed defense counsels were granted no access to the case files. The Secretariat of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) had warned against the execution of these prisoners on 19 July, 28 July, and 20 August, calling upon international bodies to take immediate and effective action to save them.

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, strongly condemned today’s anti-human crime, which constitutes a blatant violation of international law on the eve of the World Day Against the Death Penalty. She urged the United Nations, member states, and relevant human rights authorities to take immediate and effective action to halt the execution of political and uprising prisoners, particularly the other individuals condemned to death in the Alikhani Square case. She once again emphasized the necessity of bringing the regime’s leaders and its criminal judges to justice for five decades of crimes against humanity and genocide.
