In a series of attacks on prisoners, on Thursday, July 30, the Special Guards unit of Evin Prison raided Ward 8 under the pretext of inspection. Prisoners resisted the attack and clashed with the guards. In this raid a dervish prisoner suffered a heart attack and was transferred to the hospital.
A number of prisoners in this ward are political prisoners. Transferring political prisoners to the ordinary criminal’s wards is a routine practice by the Iranian regime to increase the pressure on political prisoners.
Similarly, at midnight of July 15, the day after the announcement of the nuclear agreement, prison guards attacked this same ward. Henchmen woke up all prisoners and threw them out to inspect the place which took until 1 am. In the morning of July 16, henchmen once again forced all prisoners out of the ward to search their belongings. Some of prisoners were fasting, but were forced out and sent under scorching sun in 40ᵒC heat.
On that same day, prisoners of Hall 12, Ward 7 and prisoners of Ward 3 of Gohardasht (Rajai Shahr) Prison were also attacked by prison guards.
Portraying the Iranian regime as moderate while this regime constantly ratchets up suppression of the society and cracks down on the prisons constitutes nothing less than participation in the suppression and massacre of the Iranian people. Any engagement with the Iranian regime must be made contingent upon improvement of the situation of human rights in Iran, including a halt to the executions and the release of all political prisoners.
