Today, Tuesday, January 7, 2025, the regime’s judiciary once again confirmed the death sentences of Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani on charges of membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
The death sentences for these two political prisoners were initially issued on September 16, 2024, by the notorious Judge Iman Afshari, the head of Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court. The charges included “rebellion (baghi), waging war against God (moharebeh), spreading corruption on earth, membership in the PMOI, gathering and colluding against national security, possession of classified information, and illegal possession of weapons and ammunition.”
Behrouz Ehsani, 69, a political prisoner from the 1980s, was arrested in Tehran in December 2022, and Mehdi Hassani, 48, was arrested in Zanjan in October 2022. Both were transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison, where they were subjected to physical and psychological torture.
Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani were members of the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign. In letters written last September and October, they called on international human rights organizations to support prisoners who had joined this campaign.
After receiving his death sentence, Behrouz sent a message to the Iranian people, stating: “…This execution-driven regime can do nothing else. I will not bargain over my life with anyone and am ready to sacrifice my insignificant life for the liberation of the Iranian people…”
The Iranian Resistance, recalling its previous calls—including those on April 8 and September 17 and 19, 2024—once again urges the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Human Rights Council, and other relevant UN bodies, as well as the European Union and its member states, to take immediate action to save the lives of Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani.
