NCRI-50Call for an international commission of inquiry

to visit Iranian prisons and meet with political prisoners

On Friday, December 25, 2020, Afshin Shahsavari, a supporter of the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK/PMOI) being held as a political prisoner, was beaten to the brink of death in Evin Prison.

The incident started when Afshin Shahsavari protested the harassment of two non-political prisoners by prison guards in the quarantine section of ward four of Evin Prison. Subsequently, more than ten guards and members of Evin’s special forces unit attacked him, forced him to the prison yard, threw him on the snow-covered courtyard, and continued to brutally beat and torture him with kicks from their boots. As a result, he suffered facial tears near his eyebrows, a bleeding nose, a dislocated shoulder, and a bruised body. According to one witness, the guards savagely continued to beat him even though he had fallen unconscious. He was returned to his cell without any care for his injuries.

The three criminal guards who took part in this brutal beating are identified as Jalal Mobini, Mehdi Mahmouli, and Amrollahi.

Afshin Shahsavari, 38, has been sentenced to three and a half years and has been in prison since March 2019.

The Iranian Resistance urges the United Nations Secretary-General, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Human Rights Council, and the relevant rapporteurs of the United Nations, as well as international human rights organizations, to take urgent action to stop torture and executions in Iran and again reiterates its call for the formation of an international commission of inquiry to visit Iranian prisons and to meet with prisoners, especially political prisoners.
