On March 16, 2023, the European Parliament approved a resolution condemning the poisoning of thousands of schoolgirls in Iran. The resolution called for the Council of Europe to proscribe the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization and to add Iranian regime Supreme Leader Khamenei, President Ebrahim Raisi, and Attorney General Mohammad Jaafar Montazeri to the EU sanctions list.

The European Parliament also called on the UN Human Rights Council to conduct an independent investigation into the poisonings and urged EU member states to facilitate the issuance of visas, asylum, and emergency grants to those who need to leave Iran, particularly women, and girls.

The resolution condemned the attempt to silence women and girls in Iran and expressed solidarity with Iranian students affected by the poisonings and their families. It reiterated the Parliament’s condemnation of the regime’s anti-women and anti-girls policies and demanded the abolition of all systemic discrimination.

The resolution also called for those responsible for the poisonings to be held accountable and for the Iranian authorities to grant full access to “the UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission and the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

The EU Parliament denounced the regime’s failure to act on reports of systematic toxic attacks against schoolgirls and any politically motivated legal proceedings against those reporting on the poisonings. It called for the release of all those imprisoned or prosecuted for exercising their fundamental rights and for the dropping of all charges against them.

Finally, the EU Parliament reiterated its call for the designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization and for the expansion of the EU sanctions list to all those responsible for human rights violations in Iran, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, President Ebrahim Raisi, and Prosecutor-General Mohammad Jafar Montazeri.
