A New Battle Against Apartheid, This Time in Iran

I always admired my father, the late Sen. Ted Kennedy. Last month, something happened that reminded me of him a lot. Standing before over 1,000 Iranian American activists fighting for freedom in Iran, I felt I was walking, however humbly, into his footsteps. His fight to end apartheid in South Africa shaped my own engagement in the campaign for a free Iran that echoes that same moral calling.

As a U.S. senator, my father championed many principled causes, but his crusade against South Africa’s apartheid regime remains one of his most defining battles. I watched him confront impossible odds and deep frustration. Yet he never wavered. When apartheid finally ended, I knew we had witnessed history.

Each generation inherits its own battles. For me, supporting the Iranian people as they fight to establish a democratic republic stands out as one of the defining struggles of our time.

Minister Anand Announces Additional Sanctions Against Iran

government-of-canada-vector-logo

The Honorable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that Canada is imposing additional sanctions against 4 individuals under the Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations.

These individuals, all Iranian senior officials, have been involved in gross and systematic human rights violations in the Islamic Republic of Iran (Iran), and have had a significant role in facilitating and directing repressive policies.

Iran continues to crack down on protests and dissent in violation of international human rights obligations. Security forces, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), have used excessive and lethal force to suppress protests, restricting Iranians’ rights to freedom of opinion and expression and peaceful assembly and association, among others. Reports from human rights organizations and United Nations experts have documented extensive violations, beatings, arbitrary arrests and torture, including for those in custody.

“The life and struggle of Dr. Sheikhi, longtime companion of Massoud (Rajavi) and one of the first members of the National Council of Resistance, whether during the years of the Shah’s tyranny, in the struggle against Khomeini’s reactionary repression, or in the revolutionary resistance following June 20, 1981, stand as a clear testament to the steadfastness and resistance of Iran’s universities and academic community against dictatorship.”

IAEA Resumes Inspections in Iran but Lacks Access to Key Facilities

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi

Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), announced that the agency’s inspections in Iran have resumed, but inspectors still do not have access to the key nuclear facilities of Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan. These key facilities suffered serious damage in U.S. strikes during the 12-day war. Grossi said in an interview with Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency on Monday, December 15, that the agency’s activities in Iran are very limited and inspectors only have access to facilities that were not targeted by U.S. and Israeli attacks. Abbas Araghchi, the foreign minister of Iran’s regime, had said on December 8 that resuming the agency’s inspections is currently not possible because “there is no protocol or guideline” for inspecting facilities he described as “peaceful.”

Human Rights as the Regime’s Achilles’ Heel in Iran

Executions in Iran

Why four decades of systematic violations reveal that the Iranian regime survives only by denying human dignity—and why awareness makes it unsustainable. No period in Iran’s long history has placed “human rights” so centrally—and so painfully—in the country’s political and social vocabulary as the past 47 years. Never before has the systematic violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights been so comprehensive, so normalized, and so integral to the survival of a ruling system. This is not a matter of isolated abuses or episodic repression. What Iran has experienced since the establishment of clerical rule is the institutionalization of human rights violations: violations conceived first within the ruling ideology and jurisprudence, and then executed on the ground through unchecked and often brutal practices. From childhood to old age, from daily subsistence to political participation, no social group has been spared.
