Three Security Forces Injured in Shooting in Khuzestan Province, Iran

On Monday morning, January 13, a patrol vehicle belonging to the Saleh Shahr police station was attacked by unidentified assailants on the Shushtar-Gotvand road in Khuzestan Province, Iran. The attack left two police officers and one conscript wounded.

Amir Khalafian, the public prosecutor of Khuzestan, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. He added that further details will be announced once the investigation is complete.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the motive of the assailants remains unknown. Critics argue that the incident highlights the growing instability in Khuzestan, a region that has witnessed escalating tensions and protests in recent years, often met with harsh crackdowns by the Iranian regime against dissent and marginalized communities.

Khamenei’s Hollow Displays of Power Betray His Regime’s Desperation

Rasoul Falahati, the Iranian regime’s Friday prayer leader of Gilan Province, referred to a meeting of 31 Friday prayer leaders with regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during this week’s Friday prayer sermon in Rasht. He stated, “A few days ago this week, we, the representatives of the Supreme Leader, held a gathering in Tehran. Then on Monday, these 31 provincial representatives met with Khamenei, where he said, ‘Encourage the people and distance yourselves from anything that causes despair.’” (Regime television, January 11, 2025).

Indeed, from the perspective of Khamenei, the situation is so critical and fragile, and the atmosphere of despair and defeat among regime forces is so heavy and pervasive that he did not leave the task of instructing the representatives and Friday prayer leaders of the 31 provinces to the “Policy Council of Friday Prayer Leaders.” Instead, he summoned them all to the capital to personally dictate the line they should follow. The results of Khamenei’s directives to his appointees can be observed in their statements during this week’s Friday prayer gatherings.

Qarchak Prison: Farzaneh Bijanipour Dies Due to Medical Neglect

On the evening of Saturday, January 11, Farzaneh Bijanipour, a prisoner held in Ward 6 of Qarchak Prison, passed away due to the prison doctor’s refusal to provide adequate medical care. Prison authorities prevented her transfer to external medical facilities. Farzaneh Bijanipour, incarcerated for non-political offenses in Ward 6, reported feeling chills and severe discomfort on Saturday evening and sought help at the prison infirmary. However, the prison doctor dismissed her condition as a feigned illness. Hours later, when her health deteriorated further, her cellmates brought her back to the infirmary, where she was given nothing more than a painkiller.

Later that night, Ms. Bijanipour lost consciousness. Despite being taken to the infirmary again, she died shortly after. Prison authorities delayed transferring her to a hospital until after her death.

Hezbollah’s Power Declines as Lebanon Elects New President, Weakening Iran’s Influence

Lebanon, a country long mired in political and economic crises due to Iran’s interference and Hezbollah’s obstructionist tactics, has entered a new phase of political transformation with the election of Joseph Aoun as its president. This election, which occurred after over two years of presidential vacuum, marks a fundamental shift in Lebanon’s political power balance, reducing the influence of Hezbollah and the Iranian regime. For years, Hezbollah has served as a key instrument of Iranian influence in Lebanon, playing a central role in the country’s political decisions. However, Hezbollah’s recent setbacks, coupled with the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s dictatorship in Syria, have significantly weakened the group. This decline has not only marginalized Hezbollah militarily but also politically, diminishing Iran’s ability to control Lebanon’s internal politics.
