Iran: Protests in Several Cities Over Economic Grievances as Elections Near
State-run media in Iran are warning about an all-time low voter turnout in the upcoming presidential election, a lot of which has to do with the continuously declining living conditions of the Iranian people. On Thursday, the state-run Keyhan newspaper ran a piece titled, “If you cared about election participation, you wouldn’t have created poultry queues,” referring to people standing in lines for hours to get basic goods for their families. Keyhan referred to the extremely poor performance of the government and wrote, “The president is trying to lay the blame for low voter turnout on other institutions, but its own poor performance in the eight past years in improving the economic conditions, and the decline of the national currency to an eighth of its value will have a direct effect on the people’s participation in the election.”
Police Kill 3 Civilians in South and West Iran
A Kurd border porter or “kolbar” was killed on May 26 by the police in Sarpol Zahab, western Iran. According to the Human Rights News Agency, the man was identified as 28-year-old Ghobad Rahmani.
Ghobad was a kolbar, which has become a prominent occupation for many in Iran’s western cities bordering Iraq and Turkey. Kolbars are hired to carry heavy loads across the border for meager pay. Due to the lack of economic development, increasing poverty and unemployment in western Iran, more and more Iranian Kurds are forced to take up this dangerous and harsh occupation. The regime categorizes kolbars as “smugglers” and routinely shoots and kills them.
