Iran Uprising at a Glance – Day 67
Based partially on reporting by PMOI (MEK) Network in Iran
Monday, November 21, 2022 – 7 PM CET
- Days: 67
- Protests: 243 cities
- Fatalities: 625 estimated deaths, 503 identified by MEK
- Detentions: 30,000+
The military crackdown on the Kurdish population of major Iranian cities in the country’s west, as well as missile and drone strikes on Iranian Kurds in Iraq, signals a new chapter in the regime’s increasingly desperate attempts to prevent the uprising from spreading by escalating the unrest beyond Iran’s borders. A formula that might have worked for it in the past as it stoked conflict in the region to suppress dissent at home, but that may be futile as it nears the abyss.
The regime has intensified its repression, as protests in the Kurdish-majority areas in western provinces of the country morph into an all-out rebellion, as whole districts of large cities and smaller towns fall under the control of protesters, and the country comes out in solidarity with their brethren in ethnic minority regions in the west and southeast.

The regime’s security forces, stretched thin by concurrent unrest in over 243 cities across 31 provinces, have struggled to formulate a coherent response as they face force attrition and exhaustion.

Appearing to have lost their grip in many places, they went on shooting rampages in the cities of Izeh in Khuzestan province and other cities, killing many young girls and boys, including a 10-year-old in Izeh. The child, Kian Pirfalak, who dreamed of evolving into a robotics engineer, became a new icon of the protests. The infanticide by regime security forces, some loudly announcing they will massacre residents’ children in attacks on protester neighborhoods, has backfired and fueled more protests in other cities.

Gripped with a nationwide insurrection, that is increasingly becoming angrier and more entrenched, the regime is now testing military force and massacres in the Kurdish region, and a new foreign adventure across the Iraqi border in that country’s Kurdish region. By all accounts, this strategy too is incoherent and likely to fail as Iranians and the world converge on a realization that the Iranian people have decided to bring the regime down in its entirety and usher in a new democratic republic.

State Media Acknowledge The Source of All Problems is the Clerical Regime
Iran protests continue despite the regime’s brutal crackdown. The continuation of what many consider Iran’s revolution has forced the tightly controlled state media to acknowledge that the clerical regime is to blame for all social and economic crises.
“Social crises occur when the fundamental institutions of a society dismantle or malfunction, failing to coordinate to meet the popular demands. In other words: society is unbalanced, and the [state’s] failure to fulfill the demands of the people has disrupted it,” wrote the state-run Hamdeli daily on November 20.
“The political system’s inappropriate actions in the international arena have created an economic crisis. Besides sanctions, the current economic crisis is the byproduct of the state’s policies, pervasive corruption, lack of meritocracy in choosing officials for important positions, and inflation.”
“The government should accept that anyone asking for its right is not a foreign agent. The system has failed to help families, despite having the necessary resources to address these problems. As the most important social institution, failure to resolve a family’s problems results in chaos,” the paper adds.

And as soon as they arrived at the school, they treated the young girls and teenagers the way they do in prisons with political prisoners and arrested protestors. At least ten girls were injured, but the conditions of Asra and another girl named Aytak, who went into a coma, were the worst.
