Israel Conducts Airstrike on Yemen Port

axios-vector-logo

The Israeli Air Force conducted an airstrike on the port of Hodeidah in Yemen on Sunday, two Israeli officials told Axios.

Why it matters: The Israeli officials said the strike was in retaliation for at least two attacks the Houthis launched against Tel Aviv over the past two weeks using long-range ballistic missiles.

  • The Houthis had threatened to retaliate for Israel’s strike on Hodeidah, Yemen’s fourth-largest city, in July.
  • Sunday’s attack was the second Israeli strike ever in Yemen and comes as Israel engages in war on several fronts, from Gaza to Lebanon to Yemen.

Driving the news: The Israeli strike on the Red Sea port city was conducted in the early evening local time.

War Monitor Says 12 Dead In Strikes Targeting Pro-Iranian Fighters In Syria

Agence France Presse (AFP) – Twelve pro-Iranian fighters have been killed in air strikes of unknown origin in eastern Syria, a war monitor said Sunday, adding that a large number of people were wounded.

“Twelve pro-Iranian fighters were killed in air strikes of unknown origin targeting their positions in the city of Deir Ezzor and to the east of the city, as well as the Boukamal region, near the border with Iraq,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The strikes were not immediately claimed by any entity, according to the monitor.

Five of the strikes had targeted military positions near Deir Ezzor airport, it added. Iran has been providing military aid to Syria since the civil war there began in 2011, while Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes targeting pro-Iranian groups in eastern Syria. The United States has also targeted such groups in the country’s east.

Conference with MPs and Distinguished Dignitaries in Germany

Maryam Rajavi’s speech: “Two months ago, the 80th anniversary of the White Rose revolt was remembered in Berlin. I would like to quote a sentence from one of their declarations:
“Every day you delay and do not resist these inventors of hell, your guilt grows.”

“Today, the inventor of hell is the religious fascism ruling Iran. This regime is the source of executions inside Iran and war and terrorism outside Iran.

“For years, the Iranian regime has fed the policy of appeasement with two major deceptions. First – Make others believe that the religious dictatorship will become moderate, thus holding European and American policies hostage for years.

“Second – Making others believe that there is no reliable alternative to the Iranian regime.”

Iranian General Killed as Israel Pummels Tehran’s Mideast Proxy Network

Israel killed Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) General Abbas Nilforoushan during a bombardment in Lebanon’s capital of Beirut on Friday, Iranian media reported on Saturday, as Israel pummels Tehran’s Mideast proxy network. Nilforoushan, 58, served as the deputy commander for operations in the Guard, Iran’s paramilitary. He oversaw the Guard’s ground forces.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have not confirmed the reports of Nilforoushan’s death. Newsweek reached out to the IDF, Iran’s foreign ministry, and Lebanon’s U.S. embassy via email for comment mid-morning.

State-owned newspaper Tehran Times said Nilforushan died in the same strike that killed the leader of Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hassan Nasrallah. Israel’s military previously announced that Nasrallah was killed during Friday’s strikes on Beirut. Hezbollah has also confirmed Nasrallah’s death.

What Iran’s Regime Tries to Achieve By Kicking The Can Down The Road

The principal reason Iran’s regime is not reformable is mainly because according to the regime’s own constitution, the Supreme Leader is above the law. Everything must pass through the Supreme Leader’s filter: even the law, Majlis (parliament), judiciary, executive branch, and even how the nation’s provisions are supplied. Thus, any reform or reformist maneuver is merely a political game aimed at deceiving audiences and opponents, both inside and outside the country.

Based on this, it can also be deduced that the regime has no way forward other than contraction. Even if it spins the ball of deceptive reforms for a while, it tightens the bonds of contraction elsewhere. Look at the sudden increase in the number of executions and the rise in prices after Masoud Pezeshkian was appointed as the regime’s president.

The True Tragedy of The Tabas Mining Disaster

At least 50 killed in Tabas coal mine explosion in Iran

The last news about the explosion at the Madanjoo mine in Tabas, published by the regime’s media, was brief and painful: “The death of all the miners in the Madanjoo mine in Tabas has been confirmed. All efforts were only to retrieve their bodies.”

Thus, in the early days of autumn, as schools reopen, the children of hardworking miners, who had spent their entire lives in that remote desert town for a meager livelihood, must begin the new school year grieving the loss of their fathers. The grief of the survivors and families of the deceased becomes even more heartbreaking when we learn that they are struggling to cover the funeral expenses for their loved ones. Poverty grips them so tightly that their only request to the government reporters is to relay this message: “Write about what they did to us! We even had to pay for transporting our loved one’s body ourselves. We paid between 150 to 200 million rials to bring their lifeless bodies home. And that too, without a morgue! They just give us a few pieces of ice to place on them” (Source: The state-run Shargh newspaper, September 26).

Maryam Sadat Yahyavi: Over 50 Days Deprived of Contact with Her Family

Political prisoner Maryam Sadat Yahyavi has been deprived of her right to phone calls with her family for over 50 days. This ban was imposed on August 6, 2024, following the publication of a letter written by Maryam in support of fellow political prisoner, Pakhshan Azizi. The prison authorities, in response, ordered her to be cut off from phone contact. During these 50 days, she has only been granted a single cabin visit at the end of September.

Maryam Sadat Yahyavi was previously arrested on November 2, 2014, by Iranian security forces at her home. After the interrogation period, she was released on bail. However, the Revolutionary Court sentenced her to a total of 9 years in prison on charges of “propaganda against the regime” and “assembly and collusion.” This sentence was later reduced to one year in prison during the appeals process.

Political Prisoner Amir Moavi Imprisoned 13.5 Years Without Furlough

Amir Moavi, a political prisoner in Iran, has been imprisoned for over 13.5 years without being granted a single day of furlough. His ordeal began following a series of protests in 2011 in Malashieh, a district in Ahvaz, which resulted in the death of a police officer. Moavi, along with five others—Abbas Heydarian, Nasser Heydarian, Abbas Heydari, Ali Sharifi, and Ali Heydarian—was arrested by Iran’s intelligence services on April 20, 2011. The arrests occurred in connection with clashes between local protesters and security forces. Following their arrest, the detainees were subjected to severe physical and psychological torture in an effort to extract forced confessions. After enduring prolonged interrogations, Moavi and the other prisoners were transferred to Karun Prison in Ahvaz. When Karun Prison closed, they were relocated to Sheiban Prison.
