The Spanish Senate’s Foreign Affairs Committee has unanimously approved a motion condemning Iran’s human rights violations and executions, while also expressing strong support for the Iranian Resistance and its democratic aspirations. The initiative, led by the People’s Party (PP), urges the Spanish government to increase diplomatic pressure on Tehran and work within the European Union to intensify sanctions against the regime.

Senator Gonzalo Robles (PP), who presented the motion, emphasized the need for stronger EU measures. “We must increase diplomatic pressure on the Iranian regime, implement sanctions against human rights violators, and assess the inclusion of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the list of terrorist organizations,” he stated.

Senate Endorses Iranian Resistance and Democratic Aspirations

The motion explicitly aligns with the Ten-Point Plan of Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). It endorses the Iranian people’s right to a secular, democratic, and non-nuclear republic and supports their demands for gender equality, the abolition of the death penalty, and the separation of religion and state.

Furthermore, the Senate reaffirmed its solidarity with the Iranian Resistance, particularly the women-led movement that has played a central role in nationwide uprisings. The resolution specifically acknowledges the slogan “Women, Resistance, Freedom”—a rallying cry against the clerical dictatorship that has echoed in Iran’s prisons and streets.

The motion also calls for an independent international investigation into crimes committed by the Iranian regime, particularly against political prisoners and protestors.

Concrete Measures Against Tehran’s Repression

Beyond condemnation, the resolution urges immediate diplomatic and policy actions, including:

  • Pressuring the EU to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization and impose sanctions on its leaders.
  • Utilizing all diplomatic channels to halt executions and protect Iranian human rights defenders inside and outside the country.
  • Establishing a permanent EU human rights monitoring mechanism for Iran, in collaboration with the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran.
  • Regular progress reports in Spain’s Senate to assess the impact of these measures and adjust foreign policy accordingly.

Senator Robles underscored the motion’s significance, stating, “This resolution reflects a broad consensus in favor of the Iranian people and against the regime’s repression. It represents a decisive step toward intensifying international pressure on Tehran.”

With unanimous backing from all parliamentary groups, Spain’s Senate has sent a strong message of solidarity with the Iranian Resistance, reinforcing growing international efforts to hold the Iranian regime accountable for its ongoing human rights atrocities.
