Four-minute read
The Iranian regime has long relied on a narrative that paints itself as the only viable choice for governance, claiming that without its grip on power, the country would descend into chaos akin to Syria or Libya. This message, paired with the boogeyman of monarchist remnants—who are portrayed as fractured and infiltrated—serves a dual purpose. It seeks to suppress internal dissent and discourage international support for the Iranian opposition. However, this narrative falls apart under scrutiny, as a legitimate and well-structured alternative exists: the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), led by Mrs. Maryam Rajavi.
Exposing the Regime’s Facade
Over decades, the Iranian regime has exposed its lack of legitimacy through brutal crackdowns on successive waves of popular uprisings, from the protests of 2009 to the nationwide demonstrations in 2022 and beyond. These movements have underscored the public’s rejection of both theocratic rule and any pretense of reform within the regime. Yet, the regime clings to a two-pronged strategy to maintain its grip: suppressing internal resistance and perpetuating the myth of chaos as the only alternative. By portraying the opposition abroad as divided and dysfunctional, it seeks to dissuade the global community from supporting regime change.
This narrative is bolstered by the regime’s mouthpieces in the West, who advocate for continued appeasement under the guise of pragmatism. Such arguments fail to acknowledge the existence of a credible, organized alternative that offers a roadmap for a democratic and peaceful Iran.
A Viable Democratic Alternative
The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and its leading member organization, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), represent a comprehensive and structured alternative to the current regime. The NCRI boasts decades of experience, a coherent strategy, and widespread support within and outside Iran.
At the heart of the NCRI’s vision is Maryam Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan, which has received international endorsements from over 125 former heads of state, 4,000 parliamentarians, and numerous Nobel laureates. The plan calls for democracy, human rights, gender equality, the abolition of the death penalty, religious freedom, and a non-nuclear Iran. Importantly, the NCRI does not seek to seize power but aims to transfer sovereignty to the people through democratic processes.

A Proven Presence Inside Iran
The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) stands apart as an opposition with deep and enduring roots inside Iran. Its principal member organization, the PMOI/MEK, has built a vast network of supporters through unparalleled sacrifice. Over 120,000 of its members and affiliates have been executed by the regime since 1980, including 30,000 in the 1988 massacre alone. This scale of repression reflects not only the PMOI’s status as the regime’s primary target but also the resilience of its extensive base of relatives and affiliates across Iran.
The NCRI’s internal influence is further evident in its Resistance Units. These units operate under constant threat, yet they continue to challenge the regime’s oppressive machinery with acts of defiance—documented and broadcast via social media and satellite TV. Their growth has been exponential, as seen in their 110 coordinated anti-repression campaigns during the fifth anniversary of the 2019 uprising, despite the regime’s crackdowns.
Moreover, the NCRI’s decades-long track record of uncovering the regime’s clandestine nuclear, missile, and intelligence activities speaks to its deep penetration of Iran’s power structures. The organization has repeatedly exposed classified operations that even state-backed intelligence agencies failed to detect, a testament to its embedded network within the regime’s core.
This combination of sacrifice, activism, and intelligence gathering underscores the NCRI’s unparalleled internal footprint and its role as the leading force of resistance. It demonstrates not only the NCRI’s reach and credibility but also the regime’s inability to stifle its momentum. For those assessing the viability of an alternative to the clerical regime, this internal presence is an indisputable measure of its legitimacy and potential.

A Structured Transition Plan
The NCRI’s approach to regime change and governance is both practical and democratic. Upon the regime’s overthrow, a provisional government would be established for six months to organize elections for a Constituent Assembly. This assembly would then draft and approve a new constitution, paving the way for a democratic republic. Such a structured plan ensures stability during the transition, countering the regime’s fear-mongering about post-revolution chaos.
Moreover, the NCRI has demonstrated its ability to operate independently and effectively. Its funding comes from contributions by members and supporters, ensuring financial self-sufficiency. From exposing Iran’s clandestine nuclear activities to organizing the largest gatherings of Iranian expatriates, the NCRI has consistently proven its capability and commitment to a free Iran.
Dispelling the Myths
The regime’s portrayal of the opposition as fractured and ineffective is a deliberate distortion. The NCRI’s history and accomplishments highlight its role as the central force behind Iran’s resistance movement. Its support among Iranians, both domestically and in the diaspora, is undeniable. Families of the regime’s victims, survivors of political imprisonment, and a network of over 320 Iranian associations abroad form a solid base of support for the NCRI’s goals.
The regime’s attempts to undermine the NCRI through smear campaigns, defamation, and terrorism—such as the failed 2018 bomb plot targeting an NCRI rally in France—only underscore the threat it perceives from this organized resistance. Yet, the NCRI has overcome decades of vilification, legal challenges, and terror listings, emerging stronger and more credible in the eyes of the international community.

The Role of the International Community
For those seeking freedom and justice in Iran, the path forward is clear: recognize the NCRI as the legitimate alternative to the clerical regime. This requires the international community to reject the false dichotomy of the current regime versus chaos. Instead, it must support the Iranian people’s right to self-determination and the NCRI’s efforts to bring about democratic change.
As emphasized by Mrs. Rajavi during a recent conference at the European Parliament, the international community must reassess its policies toward Iran. This includes activating the snapback mechanism to reinstate UN Security Council resolutions, imposing sanctions on the regime, and holding it accountable for its human rights abuses. Most importantly, it means recognizing the NCRI’s role as the pivotal force for change.
A Call to Action
The Iranian regime’s narrative of “no alternative” is a thinly veiled attempt to prolong its reign of terror. The NCRI offers a clear, democratic, and viable path forward, supported by millions of Iranians and respected figures worldwide. To achieve lasting freedom and stability in Iran and the Middle East, the world must stand with the Iranian people and their organized resistance.
Empowering the NCRI and acknowledging its roadmap for a democratic Iran is not just a moral imperative but a strategic necessity. The time for appeasement is over; the time for decisive support for Iran’s democratic future has arrived.
