EU Appeasement of Iran Regime Continues

EU Appeasement of Iran Regime Continues

By Shahriar Kia

Throughout the 40 years of its existence, the Iranian regime has been planning and carrying out terrorist attacks and assassinations across the world. Iran is the world’s biggest exporter of terrorism and it uses proxy groups and militias to act on its behalf.

Last year, intelligence operatives in the EU had foiled a terror plot that the regime had been planning against its main opposition. Iran had been planning on bombing the Free Iran gathering that is held every year just outside of Paris. The bombing, if it had not been foiled by the French authorities, could have resulted in a large number of casualties and fatalities.

There have also been a number of targeted assassinations against opponents to the Iranian regime all over the United States and Europe.

One of the biggest threats at the minute is the very extensive support that the Iranian regime is providing to various elements across the Middle East. This includes the support of the Assad regime in Syria and the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

This includes the provision of weapons, including ballistic missiles, and manpower including engineers and special forces personnel. The notorious Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been instrumental in providing much of this support and has provided much of the expertise that has enabled the rebels to advance.

Saudi Arabia has been targeted by ballistic and cruise missiles that have been made by Iran. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other Gulf countries also face such a threat.

Iran’s ballistic and cruise missiles are now held by several different groups across the region – Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria, the Houthi rebels in Yemen and the KSS in Iraq.

The Iranian regime has essentially been allowed to spread across the region because the international community has let it. The U.S. administration under former President Barack Obama led policies of appeasement towards Iran and turned a blind eye to most of its malign activity in the region. This made Iran more brazen in its behaviour.

The European Union has also appeased the Iranian regime, and continues to do so by working on ways round U.S. sanctions. Although EU officials condemn the Iranian regime, albeit rather weakly, for its belligerence, their passiveness is essentially a green light to Iran to continue what it is doing.

Earlier this month, the German Foreign Ministry sent representatives to the Iranian embassy in the country’s capital. They celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This is an embarrassment to Germany as the past 40 years in Iran have been marked by the denial of human rights, oppression, violence, terrorism and mass executions.

Considering the Iranian regime’s continued plotting in the EU, this was certainly a celebration that any EU official should have steered clear of. The Iranian regime will only end its belligerence when it is forced to. It is not going to willingly become more moderate as history has shown us. It has been given too many opportunities and shunned every single one.
