A woman held in prison in Iran for the past six months for writing anti-government slogans died Thursday after falling into a coma, rights groups said, accusing authorities of neglect. Somayeh Rashidi, 42, died in hospital, state television said, adding her death was caused by medical problems that existed before her arrest in April.

The Norway-based Hengaw rights group however said her illness and coma had been caused by the denial of medical treatment while held in Qarchak prison, a jail for women outside Tehran notorious for its poor conditions.

It said she had been arrested for writing pro-protest slogans in a neighborhood of Tehran.

Iranian authorities have executed over 1,000 people thus far in 2025, the highest number of yearly executions in Iran that the organization has recorded in at least 15 years, said Amnesty International. The organization is calling on the Iranian authorities to establish an immediate moratorium on executions as a first step, and issuing an urgent plea on other states to immediately intervene to pressure the Iranian authorities to halt all planned executions.

Within less than nine months, the number of people executed by the Iranian authorities so far this year has already surpassed last year’s grim total of 972 executions.

Maryam Rajavi Addresses German Members of Parliament and Distinguished Dignitaries in an Online Conference

Thank you for your attention to Iran and to the organized resistance of the Iranian people. Despite the growing repression and the rising number of executions, important changes are taking place on the people’s front in Iran. These developments point to the progress of the democratic solution in Iran. On September 6, tens of thousands of Iranians gathered in Brussels for the 60th founding anniversary of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI). They called for the overthrow of the clerical regime and the establishment of a democratic republic. Two days ago, Iranians from many U.S. states held a rally in New York, making the same demands. In Brussels and New York, these Iranians echoed the voice of people inside Iran who, in these days, are protesting in their cities.

Fresh reports reveal that Sudabeh Asadi, an inmate jailed on financial charges, died at Qarchak Prison in Varamin, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, due to medical neglect and denial of treatment. Sudabeh Asadi reportedly endured days of pain and illness without being transferred to a medical facility outside the prison. Despite several days having passed, neither judicial authorities nor prison officials have offered any explanation for the cause of her death. Her death is widely seen as the direct consequence of inadequate medical facilities in Qarchak Prison and the deliberate delay in transferring her to a hospital.

Iranian Teachers Face Poverty Wages and Intensified Repression

As the new academic year begins in September 2025, teachers across Iran return to classrooms under conditions that strip them of the minimum standards of a dignified life. They face poverty wages, precarious employment, and the denial of the right to organize independent unions. At the same time, the ruling regime continues to silence teacher activists through arbitrary arrests, fabricated charges, and heavy prison sentences. For Iran’s teachers, the start of the school year has become not a symbol of education and hope, but a stark reminder of systematic human rights violations. Iranian teachers enter the 2025–2026 academic year amid one of the worst living-standard crises in decades. The average monthly salary for a teacher is about 16 million tomans, while the poverty line for an urban household exceeds 30 million tomans. Independent reports confirm that more than one-third of teachers earn under 200 USD per month, forcing many to take on second or even third jobs to survive.

Iran’s Economy Contracts Sharply in Spring 2025, Signaling a Looming “Lost Decade”

Negative growth highlights deep structural weaknesses, leaving millions of Iranians struggling to survive. After four years of fragile recovery, Iran’s economy fell back into contraction in the spring of 2025, exposing the country’s deep structural weaknesses and threatening a repeat of the “lost decade” of the 2010s. According to data released by Iran’s Statistical Center, the economy shrank by 0.1 percent including oil and 0.4 percent without oil in the first quarter of the Persian year 1404. These figures mark a dramatic reversal from the 4.7 percent and 2.9 percent growth rates recorded in the same period last year. For millions of struggling Iranians, this downturn is more than an abstract statistic: it means emptier tables, fewer jobs, and deeper poverty.
