Canada Needs a new Iran Policy – Both abroad and at Home

The decision last month by the United States (US) to join Israel in striking Iran’s nuclear program – potentially leading to a wider regional conflict – marks a pivotal moment for Canada to rethink both its foreign policy toward Iran and its domestic approach to individuals living here that support the regime.

For decades, Iran has been the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, providing financial and material support to militant groups such as Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the Houthis in Yemen. The regime has also backed armed militias in Iraq and propped up the former Assad government in Syria, which was responsible for the deaths of more than 200,000 civilians. Together, Iran’s proxies and allies have sown chaos across the Middle East as part of a calculated strategy to project power (both internally and regionally) while simultaneously deterring its adversaries.

UN Experts Urge Iran to Choose Protection over Repression after Ceasefire

united-nations-logo

GENEVA  – UN experts* today expressed alarm over the crackdown in the Islamic Republic of Iran since hostilities began on 13 June 2025 and the subsequent ceasefire.

“Post-conflict situations must not be used as an opportunity to suppress dissent and increase repression,” the experts said. Acknowledging the impact of unlawful military attacks by Israel and the United States of America, the experts nevertheless expressed concern over reports of executions, enforced disappearaces, and mass arrests.

Since 13 June 2025, at least six individuals have reportedly been executed on charges of “espionage for Israel”, including three Kurdish men. Hundreds of individuals, including social media users, journalists, human rights defenders, foreign nationals—particularly Afghans—and members of ethnic and religious minorities such as Baha’is, Kurds, Balouchis and Ahwazi Arabs, have been detained on accusations of “collaboration” or “espionage”.

Defiant Protests in Hamedan and Khash Signal a Regime on the Brink

The people of Hamedan, central Iran, protested on July 3, 2025

In the first week of July, Iran’s regime has unleashed a new wave of lethal violence against people of Iran. From the western city of Hamedan to the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchistan, the regime’s security forces have murdered and assaulted defenseless citizens. Yet, far from instilling fear, this brutality has ignited a firestorm of organized public defiance, proving that the Iranian people will not be silenced and their only demand is regime change.

These events expose the lie behind the new administration of Masoud Pezeshkian, demonstrating that no matter the face in the president’s office, the regime’s only answer to the public’s legitimate grievances is the bullet.

Iran: Urgent Call to Save Arghavan Fallahi and Other Political Prisoners Under Torture

The Iranian Resistance has obtained new information on the whereabouts of Arghavan Fallahi, a 25-year-old woman, and three other political prisoners affiliated with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), who are currently being tortured to extract forced and fabricated confessions related to the assassinations of the clerical regime’s executioners, the notorious judges, Mohammad Moghiseh and Ali Razini, on January 18, 2025.

Arghavan Fallahi, the only woman among the four detainees, was arrested on January 25, 2025, at her home in Parand (Tehran) and taken to Ward 241 of Evin Prison, run by the Judiciary’s Intelligence Protection Unit. After enduring nearly five months in solitary confinement, she was transferred to a solitary cell in Fashafouyeh Prison (a.k.a. The Greater Tehran Penitentiary) following the bombing and evacuation of Evin. She remains isolated and under intense psychological and physical pressure.

Narges Mansouri Launches Hunger Strike in Qarchak Prison

Narges Mansouri, a political prisoner currently held in Qarchak Prison in Varamin, has gone on a hunger strike following her punitive transfer to solitary confinement.
Her health has severely deteriorated, and she is experiencing intense heart palpitations — a development that has raised serious concern among her family and supporters.

Narges Mansouri, who was transferred to Qarchak prison along with dozens of other inmates after the destruction of sections of Evin Prison, is protesting the inhumane conditions in Qarchak, including the lack of access to basic necessities.

In response, prison authorities subjected her to disciplinary measures, including solitary confinement. Her treatment — particularly the authorities’ disregard for her health — is a clear violation of the fundamental rights of political prisoners, especially women, under the Iranian regime.

France Demands Immediate Release of French Couple Held in Iran for Three Years

July 3 (Reuters) – France on Thursday demanded the immediate release of two of its citizens held in Iran for more than three years, saying Tehran’s case against them was unfounded.

The French government has accused the Islamic Republic of detaining Cecile Kohler and partner Jacques Paris arbitrarily, keeping them in conditions akin to torture in Tehran’s Evin security prison and barring proper consular protection.

French President Emmanuel Macron said he would call the president of Iran over the matter, adding that he had not ruled out taking retaliatory measures.

“It’s a provocation against France and an unacceptable choice of aggression. It’s unacceptable for France,” Macron told reporters.

Iran’s War with Israel: A Catastrophe Rooted in 46 Years of Misjudgment

How Four Decades of Ideological Ambition and Strategic Miscalculation Led Iran into an Unnecessary and Devastating War with Israel.

The recent war between Iran and Israel was not an unavoidable tragedy. Rather, it was the direct result of a long chain of miscalculations made by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and the commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)—decisions that have proven catastrophic for the country and its 87 million citizens.

This conflict could have been entirely avoided had the regime not been driven by ideological delusion and a dangerous overestimation of its own strength. The belief that no foreign power would dare strike Iran was not just naive—it was reckless. The assumption that Iran’s military capabilities alone could deter any foreign intervention was completely unfounded. These fatal misjudgments are now defining the fate of an entire nation.

Renewed Crackdown on Iranian Writers Sparks Outcry Over Free Expression After War

PEN America warns of escalating repression in Iran as the regime detains writers and artists in the wake of the Iran-Israel war, using national security as a pretext to silence dissent.

As Iran emerges from a brief but intense military conflict with Israel, the regime is turning its focus inward, launching a renewed wave of repression targeting writers, artists, and civil society figures. According to a July 3 statement by PEN America, a leading literary and human rights organization, this post-war crackdown is a stark reminder of how governments use the cover of conflict to silence dissenting voices.

PEN America, which monitors threats to freedom of expression around the world, has condemned the arrests of multiple Iranian writers and public intellectuals, calling for their immediate release and urging the regime to cease its intimidation campaign against those who exercise peaceful speech.

U.S. State Department Cracks Down on Illicit Iranian Oil Trade in Renewed Maximum Pressure Campaign

In a bold move to tighten the economic noose on the Iranian regime, the U.S. Department of State announced a new round of sanctions targeting companies and vessels engaged in Iran’s illicit petroleum and petrochemical trade. The designations are part of the ongoing implementation of National Security Presidential Memorandum-2, which mandates the application of maximum economic pressure on Tehran.

The newly announced sanctions are aimed at curbing Iran’s ability to generate revenue used to fund regional conflicts, destabilize international trade, and support terrorist and proxy groups throughout the Middle East. According to the State Department, the regime continues to exploit international maritime trade channels to secretly export oil and petrochemicals, in direct defiance of U.S. sanctions.
