State-run media outlets have reported preparations for raising bread prices in 10 provinces across the country. Two weeks ago, reports of bread price hikes in various cities and provinces began circulating. Now, more extensive and official reports indicate a 25% increase in bread prices in large parts of the country. Additionally, there are rumors of price increases in Tehran and other cities. Meanwhile, the regime’s newly appointed president is embroiled in a struggle with the Majlis (parliament) over power, corruption, and the regime’s crisis. At the same time, mass executions have broken a 30-year record within a single day and week. The infamous morality police have been reactivated, with crackdowns and arrests of women and girls in the streets, while the daily killings of impoverished porters and fuel carriers continue unabated.

Food Insecurity in Iran: A Growing Threat to Public Health

As economic challenges intensify in Iran, food insecurity and its associated malnutrition consequences have emerged as a serious threat to the health of millions across the country. Recent official data reveals that residents in certain provinces are facing particularly dire circumstances.

Mohammad Esmail Motlaq, head of the Secretariat of the High Council of Food Safety and Security, recently identified eight provinces where residents are at high risk of food insecurity: Sistan and Baluchistan, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Ilam, Hormozgan, Bushehr, Khuzestan, Kerman, and Khorasan.

In response to this crisis, Iranian authorities have developed a ‘minimum basket’ program, which outlines the daily and monthly food requirements for maintaining health. The Ministry of Health claims to have compiled this minimum food basket “with the participation of university professors, nutritionists, and experts.” However, Iran’s labor community has repeatedly criticized the program, arguing that it fails to meet the minimum caloric needs of families. Critics suggest that the government has reduced the recommended calorie intake and per capita amounts of high-inflation foods such as meat and rice in this basket.

The Decline of Iran’s Middle Class: A Consequence of Economic Sanctions and Domestic Policies

In a startling revelation, a member of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce’s deputy economic research department has announced the virtual elimination of Iran’s middle class. This dramatic shift has seen individuals from the lower middle class descend into lower income deciles, painting a grim picture of the country’s economic landscape. Hossein Ashrafi, the researcher behind these findings, attributes this phenomenon directly to the economic sanctions imposed on Iran since 2012. These sanctions, a response to the regime’s controversial activities and its insistence on continuing nuclear and missile programs have had a devastating effect on the middle class. Ashrafi’s research indicates an average annual shrinkage of 11% in this demographic, culminating in a staggering 88% reduction over the past eight years.
