Wong Condemns ‘Horrific Use of Violence’ As Australia Imposes Fresh Sanctions on Iran

SBSNews 2018 1

Australia has imposed a new round of targeted sanctions on Iran, applying financial restrictions and travel bans to 20 individuals and three entities allegedly linked to repression, violence against civilians and destabilising activity.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the sanctions responded to the regime’s “horrific use of violence against its own people”, including the killing of thousands of Iranians since late December 2025, the mass arrests of protesters, and nationwide internet and telecommunications blackouts aimed at concealing the scale of the crackdown.

The US-based organisation Human Rights Activists News Agency estimates over 6,000 protesters were killed by the regime, though Iranian officials said the number is close to 3,000.

After the Terrorist Designation of the IRGC: Europe’s Responsibility Has Only Just Begun

The decision to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization is not an ordinary foreign policy move. It is a belated, yet unavoidable acknowledgment of a bloody reality that the Iranian people have lived with for more than four decades. The IRGC has never been a defensive force. It has been the backbone of state terror, systematic repression, and a regime built on fear, violence, and executions.

This decision comes far too late. Too late for the thousands of political prisoners who were executed in silence. Too late for the approximately 30,000 people massacred during the 1988 prison killings. Too late for the young women and men who, in recent nationwide uprisings, demanded freedom — and were met with bullets.

Yet this moment still marks something decisive: the era of denial is over. The world can no longer pretend.

Appeasement Has Failed: Britain Must Finally Proscribe the IRGC and Close Iran’s Embassy

townhall-logoIt is a grim indictment of European timidity that only the slaughter of thousands of innocent protesters on the streets of Iran finally forced the European Union to act. For decades, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been the backbone of repression at home and terror abroad. Its crimes were never hidden. They were merely ignored. Now, quite belatedly, Brussels has moved and only one shameful outlier remains, the United Kingdom.

Britain’s refusal to fast-track proscribing the IRGC rests on a feeble and frankly ludicrous argument, that one cannot designate an “organ of a state” as a terrorist organisation. This is not a legal principle; it is an excuse. The IRGC is not a conventional arm of a state. It is a parallel military, intelligence and economic empire, answerable not to the Iranian people, and not even to the agencies of the state, but to the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who rules through fear, torture and murder. If that does not meet the definition of terrorism, then the word has lost all meaning.

Iran’s Future Must Break from Its Past

No one should be misled by surface calm. Although Iran’s rulers have temporarily forced protests off the streets through mass arrests, executions, and brute repression, the uprising has not ended. It has merely changed. Beneath the silence, the anger and resistance continue to grow. Across generations and social classes, Iranians remain united by a single demand: an end to dictatorship and the creation of a new political order based on popular sovereignty.

As Iran approaches a decisive moment, the question of what comes next is no longer abstract. After more than four decades of theocratic rule, a young, educated, and politically conscious society is demanding freedom, accountability, and dignity. Yet alongside these aspirations, a misleading narrative has resurfaced — the notion that monarchy, repackaged and rebranded, could offer a solution. Replacing a religious dictatorship with a hereditary system would not represent progress. It would amount to a return to unaccountable rule under a different symbol.

How Khamenei Responded to Iran’s January Protests

The Iranian regime's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei addresses his forces on June 9, 2025

The nationwide protests that erupted in Iran in January 2026 marked one of the most serious internal challenges the Islamic Republic has faced in recent years. What began as economically driven demonstrations quickly evolved into a broader confrontation between segments of society and the political system. At the center of the state’s response stood Ali Khamenei, whose speeches—particularly his address on February 1, 2026—offered a clear framework for how the leadership interpreted the unrest, justified repression, and positioned Iran amid mounting external pressure.

Prices of Iranian-Made Vehicles Jump by 50% in Less Than One Year

Head of Iran Auto Industry Workers Trade Union: National Car Production Is Devastated

The suspension of Iran Khodro’s trading symbol (a state-affiliated automobile manufacturer in Iran) on the stock exchange, coinciding with an average 50% increase in domestic car prices, has intensified disputes between automakers and the government over price controls and placed a stagnant market on the verge of a new wave of turbulence. An examination of domestic vehicle price trends from March 2025 to February 2026 shows that the upward trajectory during this period resulted in an approximately 50% increase in the prices of a significant portion of locally produced cars—an increase that, amid market stagnation, has raised serious questions about its economic rationale and social consequences.

This trend ultimately led to an order by the Ministry of Industry, Mine, and Trade to halt the implementation of the latest announced prices for Iran Khodro products. Jamshid Imani, deputy CEO of Iran Khodro, warned during a news program on Saturday, January 31, 2026, that if the new prices are not approved, the company’s production will be stopped remarks that clearly indicate a deepening rift between policymakers and producers.

Why Iran’s Regime Will Not Collapse on Its Own

Iran Protests - January 2026

One of the most persistent analytical errors regarding Iran is the expectation of a spontaneous collapse of the ruling system. This assumption overlooks a central reality: the survival of the ruling theocracy is structurally inseparable from the survival of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). As long as this system of repression remains intact, the regime will not fall. Regime change in Iran is therefore not an accident waiting to happen; it is a project—one that requires the dismantling of the repression apparatus through organized resistance and sustained uprising. Unlike classical authoritarian systems, Iran’s ruling religious fascism is devoid of any internal mechanism for reform or self-correction. The idea that it can gradually evolve, moderate, or collapse from within only serves one function: extending the lifespan of tyranny.
