US Lawmakers Call on Biden Admin for Firm Policy on Iranian Regime’s Nuclear Advancements

United States Congress

A group of congressional representatives and Senate legislators from both the Democratic and Republican parties have written letters to US President Joe Biden, urging him to collaborate with European allies in order to prevent the Iranian regime from obtaining a nuclear weapon. They emphasize the importance of “returning” UN sanctions as a means to deter the Iranian regime from further advancing its nuclear program. These letters highlight the need to address the Iranian regime’s “nuclear weapons capability” and stress that the international community should clearly communicate to Tehran that any further progress in their nuclear program will result in unified international action.

The authors of the letters, led by Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Republican Senator James Lankford, Democratic Representative Abigail Spanberger, and Republican Representative Dan Crenshaw, prepared the letter for a meeting in Washington. The content of the letters varies to some extent.

Lawmakers from both parties in the United States Congress urged that if the Iranian regime surpasses the 90% purity threshold required for weapons enrichment, the Biden administration must work together with its allies to implement UN sanctions.

In these letters, the US legislators emphasize the need for the United States to intensify efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons capability and make it unequivocally clear to the Iranian regime that any further advancements in their nuclear program will result in severe consequences.

Iran’s Fattah Missile: FCDO Statement

An FCDO spokesperson said: “Iran has announced the development of a new ballistic missile, despite repeated calls from the UN Security Council to halt its programme. This, only weeks after Iran claimed to have successfully test-launched a ballistic missile of similar capability, further proves its continued disregard of international restrictions and the grave threat posed by the regime to global security.

“Alongside partners, the UK remains committed to taking every diplomatic step to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and to hold the regime to account for its malign activity around the world.”

iran retirees protest 06062023 (1)

Authorities in Iran have been increasing their crackdown measures against the country’s restive society in an attempt to quell anti-regime protests. Recent reports indicate strict new rules and regulations on campuses to impose harsh clothing codes, especially on female students being forced to comply with the misogynist hijab dress code. Many students have been summoned by campus security to receive warnings and have even received threats of being suspended or even expelled from school. These latest developments shed more light on the regime’s concerns over the Iranian people’s growing hatred of the mullahs’ dictatorship. People throughout Iran continue to specifically hold the mullahs’ Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei responsible for their miseries, while also condemning the oppressive Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and paramilitary Basij units, alongside other security units that are on the ground suppressing the peaceful demonstrators.

Khamenei’s remarks shed light on the regime’s desperation to maintain its grip on power and its underlying vulnerabilities. In an effort to recover from the repercussions of the recent protests, he fervently tried to portray a regime that retained backing from certain factions of the population.
