U.S. Launches Broad Attack on Militant Sites in Yemen

The-New-York-Times-30112020

The United States began large-scale military strikes on Saturday against dozens of targets in Yemen controlled by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia, President Trump announced. It was the opening salvo in what senior American officials said was a new offensive against the militants and a strong message to Iran, as Mr. Trump seeks a nuclear deal with its government.

Air and naval strikes ordered by Mr. Trump hit radars, air defenses, and missile and drone systems in an effort to open international shipping lanes in the Red Sea that the Houthis have disrupted for months with their own attacks. The Biden administration conducted several similar strikes against the Houthis but largely failed to restore stability to the region.

France Reaffirms Commitment to Prevent Iran from Acquiring Nuclear Weapons

The French Foreign Ministry has reiterated its firm stance against Iran obtaining nuclear weapons, emphasizing that Tehran’s nuclear advancements pose a serious proliferation threat. Speaking at a press briefing, a French spokesperson stated: “It has always been clear for France that we are determined to ensure that Iran never acquires nuclear weapons. This is a firm and consistent position.”

The statement follows increasing concerns over Iran’s accelerating nuclear program, as highlighted in multiple reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The French government, in coordination with its E3 partners—the United Kingdom and Germany—continues to advocate for a diplomatic resolution while closely engaging with the United States and regional partners.

Recent discussions in Geneva and a United Nations Security Council meeting further underscored the gravity of the nuclear crisis. France emphasized that it remains committed to negotiations but warned of grave proliferation consequences if the regime in Iran fails to halt its nuclear escalation.

French officials expressed concerns over Tehran’s deliberate policy shifts and lack of full cooperation with the IAEA, reinforcing the need for continued international pressure to curb the regime’s nuclear ambitions. The French Foreign Ministry assured that further high-level discussions with Iran and its international partners are ongoing, though no specific dates for the next E3+Iran meeting have been confirmed.

US Secretary of State Warns Iranian Regime Against Military Expansion in Venezuela

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has issued a stark warning against the Iranian regime’s growing presence in Venezuela, declaring that the United States will never tolerate Tehran establishing an operational base in the Western Hemisphere. In an interview with Fox Noticias on March 13, Rubio accused the Venezuelan government of actively working to host Iranian military operations, stating: “The Maduro regime has told Iran that it wants to be Iran’s operational base in our hemisphere.” He emphasized that President Trump will not allow such a development, calling it “unacceptable.”

Rubio also linked the clerical regime to Venezuela’s narcotics trade, reinforcing long-standing U.S. accusations that Tehran is exploiting its alliance with Caracas for illicit activities. He warned of further punitive measures should Venezuela continue to provide Iran with a strategic foothold.

As tensions rise, Washington is expected to take a harsher stance against both Iran and Venezuela, signaling a shift toward stronger economic and diplomatic countermeasures.

G7 Foreign Ministers Condemn Iranian Regime’s Destabilizing Actions and Nuclear Ambitions

On March 14, the G7 foreign ministers have issued a strong joint statement declaring that the Iranian regime must never be allowed to develop or acquire nuclear weapons, calling Tehran the primary source of regional instability. The statement, released at the conclusion of the G7 summit in Canada, underscores growing international alarm over Iran’s nuclear ambitions and destabilizing activities.

The foreign ministers of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan, along with the High Representative of the European Union, urged the clerical regime in Iran to change its policies, de-escalate tensions, and commit to diplomacy. The statement reflects mounting frustration with Tehran’s refusal to cooperate with international norms while continuing to expand its nuclear capabilities.

The G7 also condemned Iran’s use of arbitrary detentions and assassination plots against dissidents abroad, describing these actions as a coercive tool employed by the regime. This comes amid increasing reports of Iranian intelligence targeting opposition figures in Western countries.

Additionally, the statement criticized the regime’s military support for Russia in its ongoing war against Ukraine, aligning Tehran with Moscow’s aggressive military expansion. The G7 leaders reaffirmed their commitment to taking further action against Iran and other states aiding Russia’s military efforts.

The Crisis of Nursing in Iran: Low Wages, Migration, and Government Repression

Nurses and hospital staff at Beheshti Hospital in Bandar Anzali, northern Iran, walked out in protest on March 8, 2025

Amidst economic hardships and inadequate salaries, many nurses in Iran are forced into dire living conditions, including sleeping in their cars, working as online taxi drivers, or sharing overcrowded accommodations. According to official statistics, approximately 19 nurses, doctors, and hospital technicians leave Iran daily due to financial struggles.

The Iranian newspaper Ham Mihan reports that despite nurses earning a maximum monthly salary of 14 to 15 million tomans (roughly $200) and receiving only 25,000 tomans per hour for overtime, their income barely covers their basic living expenses. Consequently, the nursing profession is witnessing a mass exodus, both domestically and internationally.

Iran: Commemoration of Political Prisoners Executed in the 1980s

Khavaran-1988-massacre

On Friday, March 14—the last Friday of the Iranian calendar year, which begins on March 21—families of political prisoners executed in the 1980s held a commemoration ceremony behind closed doors at Khavaran Cemetery.

This ceremony took place under the ongoing restrictions imposed by the Iranian regime’s security forces, who have kept the gates of Khavaran Cemetery closed for the past year, preventing families from visiting their loved ones’ graves to honor their memory.

The families of political prisoners executed in the 1980s have protested the burial of deceased members of the Baha’i community in the mass grave section designated for political prisoners executed in the summer of 1988. This protest has also been supported by the Baha’i community.

Historic Kurdish-Syrian Agreement Weakens Iran’s Influence in the Region

Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, which had plunged Syria into chaos after prolonged conflicts, a historic agreement was signed between the Syrian Interim Government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). This agreement, signed in Damascus on March 10, 2025, marks a significant turning point in Syria’s domestic politics and is expected to contribute significantly to peace and stability in the country.

This agreement officially recognizes the Kurds as an indigenous and essential part of Syria, affirming their civil and legal rights. It marks a significant milestone in addressing the long-standing marginalization of Kurdish identity and creating opportunities for their active role in governance. Beyond fostering inclusivity, the agreement has the potential to ease tensions across Syria and strengthen stability in the north and east by incorporating Kurdish forces into the national framework.
