“Look How They Howl”
The regime in Tehran is staging mourning, but most Iranians are celebrating the death of President Raisi. They dance and sing “Helicopter, helicopter”.
Babak Majidi (name changed) can’t stop laughing. “Look at the picture,” he says via voice message. “How they howl!” The 30-year-old businessman from Mashhad sent a photo via chat showing women in black chadors with faces contorted in pain and crying – in their hands, they hold pictures of the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
Ebrahim Raisi died last week in a helicopter crash. The President was in the border area with Azerbaijan with a delegation; on the way back, the helicopter crashed, presumably due to bad weather and difficult terrain. Other officials of the Iranian regime died with him, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Urgent Action: RISK OF PROTEST-RELATED EXECUTIONS AFTER UNFAIR TRIALS (Iran 103.22)
At least eight individuals in Iran are under sentence of death in connection with the “Woman Life Freedom” uprising of 2022, and nine others have been arbitrarily executed following grossly unfair sham trials. The authorities have severely violated their fair trial rights and subjected many to torture and other ill-treatment, including beatings, electric shocks, and sexual violence. Concerns of further protest-related executions are mounting amid an ongoing execution spree.

Resistance Units Across Iran Commemorate PMOI Founders on The Anniversary of Their Martyrdom
In a powerful display of unity and resilience, cities across Iran are witnessing widespread commemoration events in honor of the martyrdom anniversary of the founders of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
The PMOI’s founders, Mohammad Hanifnejad, Saeid Mohsen, and Ali-Asghar Badizadegan, were executed on May 25, 1972, by the Shah’s regime, but their sacrifice has continued to inspire generations of freedom fighters in Iran.
Resistance Units, the internal network of the PMOI, have organized numerous activities to pay homage to the founder’s legacy. These activities included displaying banners and posters, projecting images of PMOI founders and leaders, and holding ceremonies in memory of the founders.
The Right to Freedom of Social and Political Activity, Movement, and Travel
The right to social and political activity without needing another’s permission, as well as the freedom to commute and travel independently, is a fundamental human right enshrined in the third article of the NCRI plan on women’s rights and freedoms in a free Iran. This plan, unanimously approved by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) in 1987, highlights the ongoing fight for women’s rights in a country where such freedoms are severely restricted.
For many women and girls in European and American countries, the idea of needing permission to engage in political or social activities, or to travel, is inconceivable. However, in Iran, the regime has systematically imposed barriers and obstacles in the name of religion and Islam, severely restricting women’s progress and development. These rights, commonplace in many parts of the world, remain a distant dream for Iranian women. The NCRI has made it a priority to realize these freedoms following the overthrow of the current regime.
The Butcher’s Legacy: Student Oppression Under Ebrahim Raisi
The death of former Iranian regime president Ebrahim Raisi, infamously dubbed the “Butcher of Tehran,” will undoubtedly lead to new developments within the regime. This article analyzes the regime’s behavior towards students during Raisi’s tenure.
In 2019, when Raisi headed the regime’s judiciary, the Iranian government violently cracked down on student protests, using tear gas, attacking university dorms, and later purging professors and expelling or arresting students involved in the demonstrations.
Dozens of protesters were killed by security forces during this period. During the Mahsa Amini protests that erupted in September 2022 after Mahsa Amini’s death at the hands of the regime’s morality police, reports indicate that at least 308 students were arrested.
EU Expands Sanctions on Iran Over Drone Supplies to Russia
The European Union has agreed to impose sanctions on nine Iranian entities, including Iran’s Defense Minister Mohammad-Reza Ashtiani, for supplying drones to Russia that have been used in Moscow’s war against Ukraine.
The decision was reached on Friday by ambassadors from EU governments in Brussels. It will be formally announced by EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell after endorsement by EU foreign ministers during their meeting on Monday.
The sanctions will include travel bans and asset freezes on the listed individuals and entities, as well as a prohibition on making funds or economic resources available to them.
Australia Lists Yemen’s Houthi Rebels as Terrorist Organization
The Australian Government announced on Friday, May 24, 2024, that it has designated Yemen’s Ansar Allah, also known as the Houthis, as a terrorist organization under its Criminal Code Act 1995. This decision marks a significant stance against the group, which is backed by Iran and often referred to as a proxy force.
Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus stated in a media release that Ansar Allah’s violent activities in the Gulf of Aden and surrounding regions have resulted in civilian casualties, hostage-taking, and severe disruptions to maritime navigation. These actions, according to Dreyfus, undermine both maritime security and global prosperity.
