The EU Has Found A Legal Way to Label Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as Terrorist Group
The European Union has found the legal basis to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation, filling a gap that had for years prevented the crucial decision from being taken. The IRGC has been accused of leading a brutal crackdown on Iranian protesters, transferring arms to Russia, and launching ballistic missiles against Israel, as well as propping up militias all across the Middle East.
The basis stems from a ruling issued in March by the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court that found the 2022 attack against the Bochum synagogue in western Germany had been initiated by an Iranian state agency.
When the verdict was published, it raised expectations the bloc could finally secure the legal grounds to move forward with the designation, even if Brussels trod carefully.

Battleground Senate Democrats Tell Biden to Act Faster on Iran
A bipartisan group of senators, including Democrats fighting for reelection in battleground states, this week pushed President Biden to meet reporting deadlines to crack down harder on Iran.
In the letter dated Tuesday, the senators said an emergency supplemental bill signed into law in April to fund Ukraine, Israel, and allies in the Indo-Pacific had included several provisions designed to restrict Iran’s ability to sell oil and procure or distribute weapons, and that Biden has missed several deadlines to update Congress on related progress.

Iranian Regime Expert Warns of An “Existential Threat”
In a recent interview with the state-run Shargh newspaper, international affairs analyst Mohsen Jalilvand emphasized the growing strategic crisis faced by Iran’s regime, describing its current predicament as a “completely different situation,” which is summarized in two propositions: “security threat” and “existential threat.”
On October 1, Shargh newspaper wrote, “Theoretically, we must define a completely different situation… the shift from a security threat to an existential threat. Countries must perform their best in the gap between security and existence. When a country faces a security threat, it can re-produce and redefine security with some planning; but no decision-making system risks its own existence… We must seriously redefine and reproduce security threats under the umbrella of active diplomacy, but we must not, by any means, allow the floor of the security threat to rise to the ceiling of the existential threat.”
Iran’s Rebellious Youth Respond to Regime’s Wave of Executions
Simultaneously with the global campaign to end executions in Iran, the country’s rebellious youth targeted the regime’s centers of crime and oppression in various cities in response to the recent wave of executions, including 264 executions since the beginning of the presidency of Massoud Pezeshkian. The fiery response of the rebellious youth took place on October 10, in tandem with the World Day Against the Death Penalty:
Explosions at the judiciary building in Shiraz, the disciplinary office in Arak, the so-called Revolutionary Court in Harsin, the General Directorate of Prisons in Kerman, the intelligence police in Qazvin, the executive headquarters and corrupt Khomeini foundation in Tehran and Kerman, and regime buildings in Yasuj.
Iran Regime’s Strategic Missteps in the Middle East: The Aftermath of the Hamas-Israel Conflict
On the anniversary of the Hamas-Israel war, the Iranian regime finds itself grappling with the fallout of its own strategic blunders. In an ill-fated move, Iran ignited a new conflict in the Middle East without fully assessing the consequences, leaving the regime vulnerable to the repercussions that have followed. Before the events of October 7, 2023, political and regional dynamics were already signaling potential punitive consequences for the regime. However, consumed by internal crises and fearing a resurgence of domestic protests, Iran’s leadership saw war as the only option to divert attention from its problems. This desperate maneuver blinded the regime to the immediate outcomes of its warmongering, leaving it ill-prepared for the worsening situation in the weeks that followed. The future now appears bleaker than it did before October 7.
Global Solidarity with the Iranian People Following the International Day Against Execution
On the International Day Against Execution, the world turned its attention to the alarming rise of executions in Iran. As the Khamenei regime aggressively escalates its execution campaign, 1,500 prominent global figures have rallied together to call for an end to executions in Iran. Among those supporting this cause are 34 current and former presidents and prime ministers, 59 former ministers, 93 UN rapporteurs and ambassadors, 102 international judges and lawyers, 109 human rights experts, 46 Nobel laureates, 455 parliamentarians, 90 mayors, and 85 city council members. Their unified voice is a powerful stand against the death penalty and the atrocities committed by the Iranian regime.
This collective statement, released on October 10, the International Day Against Execution, marks a critical moment in the fight against capital punishment in Iran. According to Amnesty International, “Iran alone accounted for 74% of all recorded executions” worldwide in 2023, a statistic that has only worsened since the current president took office. In August 2024, more than 100 prisoners, including 10 women, were executed, further exemplifying the regime’s unyielding commitment to its execution agenda.
Varisha Moradi on An Indefinite Hunger Strike in Evin Prison
Kurdish political prisoner, Varisha Moradi, began an indefinite hunger strike on Thursday, October 10, protesting the surge in death sentences, the continued extension of her detention, and her denial of visitation rights with family and legal representation.
It has been nearly a year since the political prisoner Varisha Moradi was arrested and placed in a state of uncertainty. Her first court session was held on June 16, 2024, in Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Abolqasem Salavati. The charges against her include armed insurgency (Bagh-ye) and membership in opposition groups against the regime.
Livelihood Basket in Iran Has Increased to Approximately 370 Million Rials Per Month
The state-run ILNA news agency reported that the cost of the household livelihood basket in Iran has increased to 367.8 million rials (approximately 583 USD), stating that wages do not even cover one-third of living expenses.
Currently, the minimum monthly wage for workers covered by labor law, who are married and have children, is around 110 million rials (approximately 174 USD).
ILNA emphasized in its report that in recent months, the living costs of working families have increased due to heavy inflation affecting all goods and services. It added that in September, bread prices in various provinces rose by at least 25%, and in early October, the government officially raised the prices of milk and dairy products by 20%.
Iran’s Health Ministry Is Disregarding Nurses’ Rights
The state-run newspaper Donya-e-Eqtesad, in a report titled “Nurses Between Heaven and Earth,” quoted Mohammad Sharifi-Moghaddam, Secretary-General of the Nurses’ Association, as saying that the Ministry of Health is neglecting the real rights of nurses, and the new health minister has yet to take any meaningful action. In its October 10 report, Donya-e-Eqtesad wrote that for nearly 17 years, no one has listened to the nurses, and despite paying a large portion of their claims, it is unclear what the situation in the nursing community is like.
The newspaper highlighted these questions: Will the annual migration of 2,000 nurses decrease? Will 50,000 newly graduated nurses join Iran’s nursing community each year? And will nurses who are currently working for Snapp (a popular ride-hailing service in Iran) return to hospitals?
Iran’s Execution Surge During World Day Against the Death Penalty
As the world observed the World Day Against the Death Penalty on October 10, 2024, Iran’s execution rate surged to alarming levels, raising serious concerns about human rights in the country. Despite international calls for abolition and the new president’s claims of reform, Iran continues to be one of the world’s leading executioners.
In a stark contrast to the global movement against capital punishment, Iran carried out at least 22 executions in the week leading up to and including the World Day Against the Death Penalty. This surge in executions comes at a time when the newly elected president, Masoud Pezeshkian, claims to represent a reformist agenda.
