Khamenei’s Ban on Korean Goods Will Harm Iranians, State-Affiliated Analyst
Following Khamenei’s ban on the import of home appliances from South Korea, Mohammad Mohajeri, a member of the editorial board of the Khabar Online website, criticized the media coverage of the ruling and said that the decree has a destructive impact on Iran’s economy. Writing an article for the state-run website Khabar Online, he said: “People already knew that home appliances were banned and that those still on the market were mostly smuggled. So the media coverage of this letter is actually a great help to smugglers and brokers who are raising the price of Korean home appliances.”
In an open letter to Ebrahim Raisi, the regime’s president, Ali Khamenei had claimed that Korean goods have caused damage to domestic manufacturers of home appliances and the import of those from South Korea should be stopped. Accordingly, Raisi ordered his ministers to ban the import of home appliances from two South Korean companies. Political observers believe the ban is actually aimed as retaliation against the South Korean government’s refusal to release the $7 billion frozen funds in Seoul due to existing sanctions on the Iranian regime.
According to state media, poverty has forced Iranian people to buy second-hand appliances because of the high cost. The price of an average refrigerator is equivalent to two years of a worker’s salary.

Amid New Vaccine Ban, State-run Newspaper Underscores Domestic Vaccine’s Failure
In light of the new ban against the import of credible Covid-19 vaccines, the state-run Jahan-e-Sanat newspaper admitted that the domestic Barakat vaccines are stored in warehouses and people refuse to inject them while waiting for Pfizer and Moderna to arrive.
Excerpts from Jahan Sanat’s article on September 30 read: “People prefer to inject Pfizer and Modern vaccines. But the Ministry of Health and government officials have banned the import of Pfizer and Moderna again, despite previous promises to bring in Pfizer and Moderna, claiming that the country is now saturated with vaccines. Announcing that Pfizer vaccines would be imported after the death of 120,000 people in Iran was already too late, but banning credible foreign vaccines again destroyed the belief in controlling the Coronavirus.”
The state-run daily concluded: “Hence, the failure of collective immunity against the virus is to blame on those who delayed vaccination of the country’s population for eight months with self-imposed sanctions and false promises of domestic vaccine production. After repeated failures in controlling the disease and drowning people in multiple contracting peaks and waves, they still insist on their previous statements.”
