U.S. Defense Secretary: We Are Determined to Prevent Iran’s Regime from Acquiring Nuclear Weapons

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said on Sunday that former President Donald Trump remains unwavering in his determination to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, stating that military options are on the table if diplomacy fails.

In an interview with Fox News, Hegseth stressed, “President Trump is dead serious about reaching a deal — a negotiated deal. That’s what yesterday’s talks were all about.” He added that while peaceful resolution is the preferred path, the Pentagon has prepared alternatives should Iran cross critical thresholds. “We’ve got ways to stop them from getting a nuclear weapon — and I really hope we never have to use them,” he said.

Hegseth also pointed to recent U.S. airstrikes against Iranian-backed Houthi militants as a demonstration of American resolve and military capability. “What we did to the Houthis, and what we’ve done in the region, shows just how deep and far-reaching our power is — and we’re ready to use it to stop Iran if we must.”

EU Ministers Adopt Iran Sanctions Over Citizen Detentions

BRUSSELS, April 14 (Reuters) – European Union foreign ministers on Monday adopted sanctions against seven Iranian individuals and two organisations over the detention of EU citizens, which the bloc calls a policy of state-sponsored hostage-taking, diplomats said.

A list of those sanctioned, seen by Reuters, included the director of Tehran’s Evin prison and several judges and other judicial officials. The main prison in the city of Shiraz was among the organisations sanctioned.

EU sanctions consist of a freeze on any assets held in the European Union and a ban on any travel into the bloc.

U.S. Airstrikes Target Secret Houthi Military Sites Across Yemen, Al Arabiya Reports

The U.S. military carried out a wave of precision airstrikes targeting secret Houthi military sites and weapons depots across three provinces in Yemen—al-Bayda, al-Hudaydah, and Saada—according to field sources cited by Al Arabiya.

In al-Bayda province, four airstrikes hit a cluster of hidden weapons storage facilities near the vocational institute in the al-Sawma’ah district. The area experienced a series of massive explosions that lasted over three hours, reportedly due to detonations of explosive materials stored at the site. One of the strikes also targeted Houthi fighters attempting to flee in several pickup trucks, with an estimated 20 to 30 militants caught in the attack.

In al-Hudaydah, two strikes destroyed a newly established military site near al-Munirah district, close to the port town of al-Salif. According to Al Arabiya’s sources, a mobile ground control unit used for both reconnaissance and attack drones was annihilated. Between five and eight Houthi operatives were killed or injured during the strike.

In the northern province of Saada, two more airstrikes leveled a mountainous training camp in the al-Sahlain area of al-Salem district, southeast of Kitaf.

The U.S. air campaign comes amid escalating regional tensions and is seen as part of continued efforts to weaken Houthi drone and missile capabilities following the group’s intensified attacks on Red Sea shipping lanes.

Casualty reports remain conflicting. Houthi media claimed two dead and ten wounded in earlier reports, but Al Arabiya confirmed six deaths and at least 20 injuries in separate strikes on Houthi arms depots in Sanaa.

How Iran’s Housing Crisis Became a Currency of Survival for the Elite—and a Nightmare for the Poor

In the Islamic Republic of Iran, even the fundamental concept of “housing” has undergone a transformation. What was once a basic human need—a roof over one’s head—has now become an elite asset, a financial tool, and for many, an unattainable dream.

For years, housing in Iran has served a dual function: not only as shelter, but increasingly as a refuge for capital. In a country plagued by chronic economic instability, property—alongside gold and foreign currency—has become one of the few reliable means for the wealthy to preserve the value of their money. For the ruling elite and their affiliates, real estate is not just an investment; it’s a hedge against the turmoil of the Islamic Republic’s economic failures.

Meanwhile, for the lower classes, the goal is starkly different. Survival. A modest shelter—however small or distant from urban centers—has become the endgame in a housing market that grows more exclusionary by the year. The result is a country where the very definition of “home” is drifting further and further from the reality of the average citizen.

Storm and Turmoil in Iran’s Car Market

Over the past month and during the early days of the Iranian calendar year (which began on March 21), Iran’s car market has gone through one of its most volatile periods.

The unchecked rise in the prices of both domestic and imported cars in the open market has raised widespread concerns among the public and economic experts. Many analysts believe the root causes lie in poor policymaking, excessive government taxation, chronic inflation, the persistent rise of the U.S. dollar against the rial, and the monopoly held by domestic car manufacturers.

Imported car prices have surged dramatically in recent weeks. For instance, the cheapest used imported car in the open market has been priced at a minimum of 18 billion rials (approximately $17,143), while the prices of some high-mileage SUVs have surpassed 40 billion rials (about $38,100). Since the beginning of the new year, the price of certain foreign vehicles has increased by as much as 4 billion rials (around $3,800) in just 20 days. This is despite the fact that, according to automotive industry insiders, the car market is in a state of complete stagnation, with very few buyers.
